A New Chapter for a Family Favourite: The 2027 All-Electric Toyota Highlander Is on the Way

A New Chapter for a Family Favourite: The 2027 All-Electric Toyota Highlander Is on the Way

One of Toyota's most familiar family SUVs is about to undergo a major transformation. The all-new 2027 Toyota Highlander is going fully electric while keeping the three-row versatility that makes it so practical for families managing children, luggage, groceries and weekend plans. Toyota is pairing that family-focused design with strong EV range, simplified charging and a cabin filled with new technology. Canadian production specifications may still change, but the details Toyota has announced already offer plenty to discuss.

Up to 511 KM Opens Up the Weekend

Range matters even more in a family EV, and the 2027 Toyota Highlander is aiming high. Toyota estimates up to 511 km of combined driving range on the XLE AWD Extended Range. That gives this battery electric SUV the flexibility to handle the weekday commute and stretch into longer family trips without making every drive revolve around the next charger.

Level 2 Charging Fits Real Life

The electric setup is designed around more than range alone. The 2027 Toyota Highlander supports Level 2 charging and offers Vehicle-to-Load capability, adding useful flexibility when you need access to electrical power away from home. Toyota also adds a clever visual detail: charge-level indicators integrated into the full-width front LED headlights, so you can check charging progress with a glance while the SUV is plugged in.

Three Rows Stay in the Formula

Going electric has not pushed family practicality aside. The 2027 Toyota Highlander retains three rows of seating, with available second-row captain's chairs or bench seating. Choose the captain's chairs and one-touch power-fold buttons make third-row access easier. Even with every seat occupied, Toyota says there is up to 450 litres of cargo space behind the third row.

14 Inches of New Toyota Tech

The cabin gets a substantial technology upgrade with Toyota's latest multimedia system displayed through a 14-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility keeps everyday phone connectivity simple. USB charging ports are available across all three rows, while dual Qi-compatible wireless chargers up front help solve the inevitable battle over who gets to charge first.

Your Phone Can Become the Key

Digital Key 2.0 capability adds another layer of convenience. Using a compatible iPhone, Apple Watch or Android device, drivers can remotely unlock the doors and rear hatch and start the vehicle. A 5-door Smart Key System is also part of the technology package, making access easier when your hands are already occupied.

Safety Sense Gets Its Next Upgrade

The 2027 Toyota Highlander introduces Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, Toyota's latest safety suite. Announced enhancements include an expanded Pre-Collision System, upgraded Front Cross Traffic Alert and upgraded Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist. For a three-row family SUV, those are upgrades that matter far more than simply adding another gadget to the dashboard.

2026 Toyota Tacoma or 2026 Honda Ridgeline: A Decision That Comes Down to One Question

Midsize trucks used to mean one thing, rugged and rough around the edges, but the Tacoma vs Ridgeline comparison shows how far the segment has split. The Tacoma sticks close to that traditional truck identity, while the Ridgeline goes all in on comfort and daily convenience instead. Both seat five, both bring strong gas power, but torque, tech, and safety are where these two really start to... Read more
